Susie King Taylor was a pioneering figure in nursing and writing. As the first Black Army nurse, she served during the Civil War with a regiment of United States Colored Troops. Her memoir stands as the only surviving account by a Black woman of her wartime experiences, making a vital contribution to historical records. Beyond her medical service, she was dedicated to education, becoming the first to openly teach former slaves in Georgia.
