In today’s global higher education system, successful written communication often entails familiarity with a special kind of writing - one that is discursive without being informal, cautious without being naïve, and individual without transgressing discipline-specific conventions From a pedagogic perspective conventions. perspective, these requirements may only be better learned, practiced and appropriated when exemplified in real context of use. This book is a contribution in this direction. Based on a million-word corpus of conference abstracts, students’ dissertations, and essays, the book explores key aspects in academic writing. It introduces the concepts with concrete examples from Cameroon and offers the first qualitative and quantitative analysis of hedging, meta- discourse, evaluation, and modality as well as lexical bundles and textual variation. The book closes with a summary of the main issues and suggestions for teaching academic writing in the national context.
