More about the book
„Filters and frames“ addresses the entanglements of photographic visibility and invisibility in form and content. Taking photographs, as well as the engagement with photographic images, is linked to processes of selecting, sorting and separating – processes that essentially influence our acquisition and perception of these images. However, they rarely show openly, except at breakpoints and discontinuities, or when they explicitly become the topic. The contributions of this volume reflect filters and frames as concrete phenomena, but also as processes with cultural-theoretical and political implications. They investigate photographs in the context of their complex structures of action within which they arise and circulate. The text contributions and artistic works in this publication themselves form a complex structure and explore filters and frames beyond the edges of a photographic picture. „Filters and Frames“ is published in correlation with the eponymous exhibition with works by Fatoumata Diabaté, Katrin Kamrau, Andreas Langfeld and Tomoko Sawada. Curated and edited by Katja Böhlau and Elisabeth Pichler within the framework of the DFG Research Training Group The Photographic Dispositif at Braunschweig University of Art.
