In the town of Castle Rock, Maine, a five-year-old boy called Tad Trenton has nightmares about the monster which he sees nightly watching him from the cupboard in his bedroom. His mother, Donna, says that it is just a pile of old blankets. Tad knows it is real; paralysed with fear he sees the burning eyes and smells its foetid breath.
