The story follows Charlie, a young man from Kansas who enlists in the USMC just after turning nineteen during World War II. Rising to the rank of corporal, he serves in the Fourteenth Regiment, part of the newly formed Fourth Marine Division, which specializes in amphibious assaults in the Central Pacific Theater. The narrative explores his experiences and the challenges faced by his regiment as they engage in fierce battles against the Imperial Japanese Military in the South Pacific.
