Making use of much historical research, this imaginative novel tells how the Christian idea of eternal suffering arose from the musings of a Greek philosopher. How it gained leavening from events in Jerusalem before and during the War with Rome. How it took firm hold during political maneuverings in the early Middle Ages. Clues to the idea's origins were scattered, some deliberately; a puzzle waiting more than a millennium for a solver. Then a European archaeologist, and (generations later) a religious skeptic, stumble on evidence that all was not divinely inspired.
