This is the first publication to comprehensively explore art collector and philanthropist Sir Mark Fehrs Haukohl’s collection of work by European women photographers. One of the largest of its kind, the collection comprises 220 works by nearly 90 emerging and established women photographers from 17 countries in Western and Eastern Europe. Covering photo-based art made between 2000 and 2020, Haukohl’s eclectic selection questions traditional notions of nation, identity and gender, with an emphasis on representations of the body and associated themes of beauty, femininity and objectification. Artists including Yto Barrada, Uta Barth, Carolle Bénitah, Melanie Bonajo, Vanessa Beecroft, Valerie Berlin, Natalie Czech, Eva Koťátková, Vera Lutter, Josephine Pryde and Shirana Shahbazi employ wide-ranging materials and conceptual approaches to expand our changing understandings of what constitutes womanhood, Europe (for many, in the context of the legacy of Soviet rule), and the medium of photography itself.

This extensive overview is an homage to all the photographers, artists, writers, designers, printers, paper importers and publishers, as well as the museums, associations, and commercial clients and their organizations that shaped Dutch photo publications between 1912 and 1980. Across more than 500 pages, through a series of texts and more than 1,000 reproductions, the work and vision of Hendrikus Theodorus Wijdeveld, Piet Zwart, Jan Kamman, Paul Schuitema, Dick Elffers, Nico de Haas, Emmy Andriesse, Cas Oorthuys, Martien Coppens, Ed van der Elsken, Jurriaan Schrofer, Dirk Meijer and Joop Swart—among dozens of others—is explored in detail. Highlighting the most important individual contributions they made to their trade and craft, the book also demonstrates their collaborative efforts for excellence. The publications documented here rank among the most creative and influential in the global fields of photography and the graphic arts.

This survey of Czech and Slovak photo publications commemorates the hundredth anniversary of the founding of the Republic of Czechoslovakia on 28 October 2018. It demonstrates the persistent tradition of superior artistic imagination and technical ingenuity that is uniquely and wonderfully Czech and Slovak. Over its more than 1,000 years of existence the Czechs and Slovaks were only a free nation between 1918 and 1938—and again since 1989. When finally living under their own rule, photographers and writers, typographers and book designers, graphic artists and printers were consumed by a love of country and documented its landscapes, cities, national treasures, monuments and the life of its people with unflinching attention—thus forming their unique cultural identity, even during Nazi annexation and 40 years of Communist occupation. In nine chapters this comprehensive book explores over 800 publications from 1918 to 1989, highlighting the work of more than 250 photographers and graphic artists including Alphonse Mucha, Josef Sudek, Frantisek Drtikol, Jaromír Funke, Jaroslav Rössler, Zdenek Tmej, Jindrich Styrsky, Karel Teige and Ladislav Sutnar to Vladimír Hipman, Karel Plicka, Jan Lukas, Karel Hájek, Tibor Honty, Josef Prosek, Libor Fára, Martin Martincek, Karol Kállay, Pavel Stecha, Jindrich Streit, Bohdan Holomícek and Josef Koudelka.

The Soviet Union was unique in its formidable and dynamic use of the illustrated book as a means of propaganda. Through the book, the U. S. S. R. articulated its totalitarian ideologies and expressed its absolute power in an unprecedented way—through avant-garde writing and radical artistic design that was in full fl ower during the 1920s and ’30s. No other country, nation, government or political system promoted itself more by attracting and employing acclaimed members of the avant-garde. Among them were writers like Semion Kirsanov, Vladimir Mayakovsky, Ilya Selvinsky, Sergei Tretyakov and Kornely Zelinsky; artistic designers like Gustav Klutsis, Valentina Kulagina, El Lissitzky, Sergei Senkin, Varvara Stepanova, Solomon Telingater and Nikolai Troshin; and photographers including Dmitry Debabov, Vladimir Griuntal, Boris Ignatovich, Alexander Khlebnikov, Yeleazar Langman, Alexander Rodchenko, Georgy Petrusov—not to mention many of the best printers and book binders. The Soviet Photobook 1920–1941 presents 160 of the most stunning and elaborately produced photobooks from this period and includes more than 400 additional reference illustrations. The book also provides short biographies of the photobook contributors, some of whom are presented here for the first time.

Seit ihrer Gründung im Jahre 1951 setzt sich die »Deutsche Gesellschaft für Photographie« für die kulturellen Belange der Fotografie und verwandter Bildmedien ein. Dabei widmet sie sich nicht nur der Autorenfotografie, sondern auch den weiteren Anwendungsgebieten des Mediums wie der Wissenschaft, Bildung, Publizistik, Wirtschaft und Politik. Darüber hinaus würdigt sie mit ihren verschiedenen Preisen unkonventionelle Verfahren und neue Bildmedien. Der vorliegende Band von Zeitprofile gibt eine Übersicht über die Preisträger des weltweit hoch angesehenen Kulturpreises der DGPh von 1959 bis 2014 und stellt im Besonderen die Preisträger und ihre Arbeiten aus den Jahren 1989 bis 2014 vor. Bereits 1989 hatte der Herausgeber im Namen der DGPh und im Rahmen der »Photokina Bilderschauen« eine erste Dokumentation der Kulturpreisträger der Jahre 1958 bis 1988 erstellt. Die Publikation ist eine Hommage an die gedruckte Fotografie, und so werden die Arbeiten der Preisträger anhand von gedruckten Doppelseiten aus Büchern, Katalogen und Zeitschriften präsentiert. Unter den Kulturpreisträgern der letzten 25 Jahre befinden sich: Andreas Feininger, F. C. Gundlach, Klaus Honnef, Peter Keetman, David Hockney, Karl Lagerfeld, Richard Misrach, Daido Moriyama, Evelyn Richter, Ed Ruscha, Steven Shore, Wim Wenders und Wilfried Wiegand.

Svět Helmuta Newtona je nanejvýš složitý a mnohovrstevný. Jestliže bylo jeho dílo považováno v 60. letech za šokující a provokativní, dnes se ukazuje, že Helmut Newton předvídal obraz ženy, jak se nám jeví na počátku nového tisíciletí: ženy, která raději sama udává tón, než aby se podřizovala, ženy, která se těší z překypující vitality svého těla, o němž sama rozhoduje, ženy zodpovědné za sebe i svoje touhy. Módní fotografie, akty a portréty – to jsou tři kategorie, do nichž Newton rozdělil svoje dílo. Ale tak jednoduché to není: módní fotografie může být též portrétem nebo aktem a naopak. Tato kniha společně s výstavou v berlínské Neue Nationalgalerie představila Newtonovo dílo v celé šíři a oslavila 80. narozeniny tohoto výjimečného fotografa, který se narodil v roce 1920 v Berlíně.
