More about the book

The findings in this edited volume stem from the SCARLED (Structural Change in Agriculture and Rural Livelihoods) project, co-financed by the European Commission from January 2007 to September 2010. SCARLED aimed to analyze the restructuring of the agricultural sector and rural socio-economic transformation in the New Member States (NMS), focusing on Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and Slovenia. Additionally, it examined rural "success stories" in established EU member states, specifically in the Borders, Midlands and Western Region (Ireland), Navarra (Spain), Skåne (Sweden), Tyrol (Austria), and Altmark (Germany). Research findings are accessible on the SCARLED website and have been published widely. This book emphasizes the lessons learned from previous EU enlargements regarding rural development policies, presenting a structured approach. The first chapter offers an introduction and summarizes key lessons derived from past enlargements. Following this, concise reports from the five case studies on Ireland, Spain, Sweden, Austria, and new German Bundesländer are included, utilizing a uniform methodology for cross-comparison. Authors had the flexibility to highlight issues they deemed most significant. Comprehensive reports are also available on the SCARLED website.
