This book is an introduction to the history of the unification of modern Greece. The author, based on his research in unpublished sources as well as collections, memoirs, monographs, articles, and other works by Greek and foreign historians, analyzes the events that led Greece to political unity, starting from the pre-revolutionary years at the end of the eighteenth century and reaching the Asia Minor Catastrophe. It discusses the liberation struggles that mark Greek history from 1770 to 1923: the Revolution of 1821, the Cretan Revolt of 1866-69 and 1896-97, the Macedonian Struggle (1897-1908), and the war in Thrace and Asia Minor. It also examines the political developments of the period, institutional and governmental changes, internal conflicts, Greece's relations with the Great Powers of Europe and neighboring Balkan peoples, the Balkan Wars (1912-13), Greece's participation in World War I, and economic and spiritual life. This extensive historical scope is complemented by maps and special appendices on governments, elections, and parties in Greece from 1833 to 1924, as well as a detailed index.
