More about the book
People worldwide acknowledge the severe threat of climate change, prompting governments, businesses, and individuals to commit to renewable energy and reducing carbon footprints. However, what if these efforts are insufficient for the future health or survival of humanity? Peter Fiekowsky warns that the prevailing goal of net zero carbon emissions could lead to disaster. He advocates for a more ambitious target: restoring the climate to a state conducive to human thriving. Scientific evidence indicates that humans flourished when atmospheric CO2 levels were below 300 parts per million (ppm), yet net zero emissions would still leave us at a perilous 460 ppm. To achieve a healthier climate, we must remove a trillion tons of excess CO2 from the atmosphere. Fortunately, this daunting task is technically feasible. Four major technologies for greenhouse gas removal and storage have been developed: ocean iron fertilization, synthetic limestone manufacture, seaweed permaculture, and methane oxidation. Fiekowsky demonstrates that these methods are safe, practical, and can be financed through existing markets rather than relying heavily on government funding. As the climate crisis escalates, it's crucial to engage in serious discussions about the necessary actions for a sustainable future. This work aims to inspire those conversations and the actions needed to secure a livable planet for future generations.
