The year is 1901. Hattie Clark is a widow with gumption, living alone in her homestead at the bottom of the Salmon River Canyon in rural Idaho--until Toby, a runaway eight-year-old boy, comes into her life and changes everything. Toby has come in search of his grand uncle, Afton McCabe, the gruff goldminer who is Hattie's closest neighbor. Hattie and Afton strike up a friendship that begins with their decision to return Toby to civilization the only way they can--via a desperate boat trip down the Salmon River, known as the River of No Return.
