Set against the backdrop of World War II, the story follows Enzo, a young Italian man torn from his studies in Germany to serve as an interpreter in Italy. His experiences in Rome and Lampedusa intersect with the lives of his cousins, each navigating the war in their own way—one as a fighter pilot, another as a Vatican priest aiding refugees, and yet another involved with the mafia and American intelligence. As Enzo witnesses the American and British invasion of Sicily, he resolves to reclaim his life and return home as the war nears its end.
