This catalog is the companion volume to an exhibition drawn from private collections in the USSR. The works were selected not only for their quality as art, but also for the insight they give into a turbulent phase of Russian history. The work of regional as well as religious or mystical artists is represented. The largest body of work is from the years 1905 to 1940, a period which saw the rise of the aesthetic known as socialist realism. There are 200 illustrations, 72 in color.
