The death of Rhona Rosowicz brings her remaining family to the decaying Edinburgh mansion where she and her daughter Esme had lived a solitary life. Surrounded by people she hardly knows. Esme's behaviour excites attracts and infuriates her relations as their lives intertwine in the mode of a dance. Esme's growing friendship with her aunt's husband leads to forbidden fruits, and through him she discovers the existence of her Polish father whom she thought long dead.
