David Herbert Lawrence nacque nel Nottinghamshire nel 1885. Ricordato principalmente come romanziere, Lawrence iniziò a scrivere poesia all'età di diciannove anni e pubblicò i suoi primi pezzi nel 1909. Il suo primo libro di versi, "Love Poems and Others", apparve nel 1913. Seguì "Amores" (1916), "Look! We Have Come Through" (1917), "New Poems" (1918), "Bay" (1919), "Tortoises" (1921), "Birds, Beasts and Flowers" (1923) e "Pansies" (1929). Le sue "Collected Poems" apparvero nel 1928 e "Last Poems" fu pubblicato postumo nel 1932. D.H. Lawrence morì di tubercolosi a Vence nel 1930.
