Our Earth Series - 4: Now & Then Bahrain

More about the book

Bahrain has undergone a remarkable transformation in the latter half of the century, evolving from a nation reliant on the pearling industry to a vibrant modern state, thanks to the discovery of oil. The significant changes over just three generations are captured in old photographs, many taken by pilots visiting the region. Inspired by these images, pilot and photographer John Nowell embarked on a journey to replicate the original locations for a contemporary perspective. His research led him around the world and into the heart of Bahrain, where he captured both aerial and ground-level views, revealing sights that might have otherwise faded with time. Notably, he photographed a dhow nakoudah, born in 1904, as they stepped a mast and hoisted Bahrain's last traditional lanteen sail. Near the modern Grand Mosque, he documented traditional dhows used for shrimp fishing against a backdrop of new high-rises on reclaimed land. Additionally, he discovered the original flying boat terminal, complete with 1930s ceiling fans, located just 1.2 km from the Grand Mosque. This work offers a captivating glimpse into a nation in continuous transition, serving as both a historical photographic record and an inspiration for future photographers.
