This book is a celebration of the richness and variety of the gardens that grace Virginia and an introduction to The Garden Club of Virginia's story of the restoration and preservation of the grounds and gardens surrounding the Commonwealth's historic landmarks. When the first settlers arrived in the early 17th century they brought from England their custom of country houses and the gardens that naturally go with them. Across Virginia today are old gardens fragrant with sweet smelling shrub and velvety green with boxwood, and later gardens colorful with bulbs and native flowers in formal and informal arrangements that reflect the lifestyle of the owners.
