Josef Eberle wurde 1901 in Rottenburg geboren und erhielt seine Buchhändlerausbildung in Tübingen. Er arbeitete als Lektor und Redakteur beim Süddeutschen Rundfunk, wurde jedoch 1933 entlassen und hatte ein Schreibverbot. 1945 gründete er die "Stuttgarter Zeitung". Eberle wurde mehrfach geehrt und starb 1986.
