More about the book

To enhance German-Chinese collaboration in oncology, the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) hosted a symposium in Heidelberg from July 3 to 5, 1985, focusing on liver, esophageal, and nasopharyngeal cancers. These cancers are rare in Europe but prevalent in China, with Chinese patients accounting for nearly half of the 260,000 global primary liver cancer cases and over half of the 300,000 esophageal cancer cases annually. Nasopharyngeal cancer is approximately 100 times more common among Chinese individuals than Caucasians. Consequently, the Chinese speakers at the symposium, experts in these cancer types, shared extensive clinical experiences drawn from large patient populations, which are difficult to replicate in Europe. Their insights were complemented by contributions from European specialists, providing a comprehensive overview of the current state of knowledge on these cancers, covering epidemiology, pathology, and clinical treatment. The editors express gratitude to the Federal Ministry of Research and Technology (BMFT) for their support, the DKFZ Management Board for their assistance, and Springer-Verlag for the publication and quality production of this volume.
