Michelangelo: Drawings by Ludwig Goldscheider. With 242 illustrations. When we turn from Michelangelo's gigantic frescoes and sculptures to his sketchbook and drawings, we expect to see flashes of those prodigious conceptions, and we gain, insight into the masters mind and his workshop, where those creations came into being. Some drawings relate to the Sistine frescoes, the Last Judgement, and the two paintings in the Pauline Chapel, others are studies for the David, the Medici Chapel and the Tomb of Pope Julius II. Other sheets again are independent, such as the presentation drawings for for Cavalieri and Vittoria Colonna, compositions and the Crucifixions and other religious compositions from his later period. This volume includes reproductions of the finest drawings from the Royal Library at Windsor and the museums of Florence, Venice, London, Oxford, Paris, Bayonne, Vienna, Munich, Haarlem and New York, some of them reproduced for the first time.
