More about the book
A comprehensive survey of Jewish life in Emden. States that during the 16th century Jew-hatred in Emden had political and economic motives. The Jews were protected by the ruling landgrave to whom the population was hostile. Anti-Jewish incitements were mostly provoked by local merchants in order to prevent competition. Physical attacks on Jews occurred in the 1760s, when the Jews were used as scapegoats for economic misery. A blood libel is known to have occurred in Emden in 1781.
