Richard M. Nixon's accomplishments in foreign affairs have long been cited as enduring successes: during his Administration the United States reestablished ties with China, initiated detente with the U.S.S.R., and ended American participation in the Vietnam War. Despite the scandals of Watergate that forced Nixon from office, he and Henry Kissinger, his National Security Advisor and later Secretary of State, have continued to be regarded as skillfull, wise practitioners of global realpolitik.
