At Home in Europe: Muslims in Leicester

More about the book

"I am new compared to others, but I feel I have lived in Leicester forever. I define myself as European, Somali, Muslim—many definitions. In Leicester, regardless of background, whether black, white, Asian, Christian, or Sikh, people respect you." These reflections come from one of 300 participants in a significant study on the social inclusion of Muslims, conducted by the Open Society At Home in Europe Project. This study is the first of 11 city reports examining the integration of Muslims across various European cities, including Antwerp, Amsterdam, and London. The research focuses on the political, social, and economic involvement of Muslim communities in Leicester, a vibrant city anticipated to become Europe's first plural city without an ethnic majority. The report specifically highlights three wards: Evington, Stoneygate, and Spinney Hills, exploring the experiences of Muslims in education, employment, health, housing, citizenship, political participation, policing, media, and identity. It provides recommendations for local and national authorities, showcasing how Leicester effectively manages its ethnic and cultural diversity, turning it into a valuable asset for urban life.
