More about the book

This volume presents edited lectures and selected research contributions from the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Advances in Fatigue Science and Technology, held in Alvor, Portugal, from April 4 to 15, 1988. Organized by CEMUL at the Technical University of Lisbon, the event gathered 101 participants, including 15 lecturers from 14 countries, consisting of leading scientists, engineers, and Ph.D. students. Participants shared their research findings, engaging in extensive discussions on scientific aspects throughout the sessions. The Institute fostered interaction among eminent scientists and engineers from various backgrounds and young researchers. Key topics addressed included the foundations and current state of fatigue science and technology, covering areas such as Short Cracks, Metallurgical Aspects, Environmental Fatigue, and Creep and Fatigue Interactions at High Temperature. Other subjects included Multiaxial Fatigue, Low Cycle Fatigue, Fatigue Testing Methodology, and the Fatigue of Advanced Materials, alongside engineering applications in welded joints, energy systems, offshore structures, and the automotive industry. The book is organized into three parts: Fundamentals of Fatigue, Engineering Applications, and Research Contributions, encompassing a wide range of relevant research areas.
