To survive, Keita must stay mobile, evading Hamm and officials who threaten to send him back to a country where he faces death. He navigates relationships with various characters: John Falconer, a student making a documentary about AfricTown; Ivernia Beech, an elderly woman facing assisted living; Rocco Stanton, the Immigration Minister and a recreational marathoner; Lula DiStefano, the self-proclaimed Queen of AfricTown; and Viola Hill, a black reporter investigating corruption between Freedom State and Zantoroland's officials.
