The author argues that German poets of the 1820s in general and Heine in particular, revealed in their verse an intense awareness of prior work by contemporaries and recent predecessors. He shows clearly how deeply rooted Heine's first phase of poetry was in the late-Romantic or early Biedermeier movements.
