More about the book

Benedikte Naubert, born in 1756 in Leipzig, was the daughter of a physician and African explorer. She married merchant Johann Georg Naubert in 1802. From 1785, she authored over 50 historical novels, often featuring historical figures as main characters. After losing her sight in 1808 due to an eye ailment, she dictated her works to her youngest daughter. Naubert passed away on January 12, 1819, at the age of 62. This collection comprises German folk tales first published anonymously between 1789 and 1792. The complete new edition, edited by Karl-Maria Guth in 2015, includes tales such as "Erdmann und Marie," "Erlkönigs Tochter," "Die hamelschen Kinder," "Ottilie," "Die Legende von St. Julian," "Jungfernsprung und Rosstrab," and "Die weisse Frau." The text is based on the 1840 editions published by Gebhard and Reisland, with precise pagination included as marginal notes. The cover design features an image inspired by a stained glass depiction of the Pied Piper from the market church in Hameln, based on a watercolor from 1592. The book is typeset in Minion Pro, 11 pt.
