This volume's 23 contributions from senior and younger researches working with the Ancient Near Eastern heritage are based on the hypothesis of a general empiric attitude of Ancient Mesopotamian scholarship. The articles try to elucidate these underlying principles, making use of various sorts of modern theories and methods. The book covers a broader range of topics: astronomy, politics, agriculture and irrigation, linguistics, architecture, medicine and others.

This festschrift devoted to the ancient Near Eastern scholar B. Kienast (Freiburg) contains 41 contributions (almost all in English and German) on history, literature, and languages of Mesopotamia, Syria, and Israel. Among others, H. Schaudig writes about Nabonid, the "Archaeologist on the throne," P. Steinkeller on Lugalzagesi's Origin, J. Hengstl on the Etana epic, and J. Tropper on the language of Ebla.
