The story revolves around a girl named Antonia, the "witch of Zardino," who was executed at the stake at the age of twenty simply for being different. Abandoned as a child, she grew up in a convent orphanage in Novara. At the age of ten, she was taken in by a childless couple, the Nidasi family, who treated her as their own rather than as a servant, which was common in such adoptions. Despite her kindness and pleasant nature, few in the village liked her, unable to forgive her beauty and unique position. Human hatred, fueled by ignorance and fear, led Antonia to an inquisitorial trial that showed no mercy. Vassalli vividly depicts the harsh daily life and oppressive atmosphere of this corner of the world during the Counter-Reformation under Spanish rule.
