La narratrice tente de cerner l'inconstance du sentiment amoureux, la douleur de ce qui ne dure pas. Le roman veut aussi réfléchir, à travers la question de la transposition cinématographique, au rapport entre les mots et les images, au rôle de la représentation et de l'imagination dans l' ce qui est aimé, c'est ni toi ni moi, mais seulement l'image qu'on en a.
