Tolkien, sommo studioso di letteratura inglese medievale e anglosassone, ha creato un mondo immaginario ma tutto oggettivato, all’antica maniera epica, e assolutamente verosimile. In questo primo romanzo, il lettore conosce gli Hobbit, piccoli esseri lieti, saggi e longevi, che vivono in un idillico paese agricolo. La quiete è turbata quando Frodo, convinto dallo stregone Gandalf, è costretto a partire per il paese delle tenebre, Mordor, dove dovrà gettare nelle fiamme del Monte Fato il terribile Anello del Potere, giunto nelle sue mani per una serie di incredibili circostanze.
