Vermutlich im Auftrag der niederrheinischen Prinzessin und späteren Herzogin von Lothringen, Philippa von Geldern (1467–1546), entstand zu Beginn des 16. Jahrhunderts im Umfeld des Pariser Hofes ein reich illustriertes Stundenbuch. Jean Coene IV., einer der wenigen namentlich bekannten Buchmaler der Zeit, stattete das außergewöhnliche Werk mit einem komplett durchillustrierten Kalender und 24 (von einst wohl 27) großen Miniaturen aus. Erstmals wird das in Privatbesitz befindliche Stundenbuch nun vollständig der Öffentlichkeit präsentiert – begleitet von einer Untersuchung der Rolle der Auftraggeberin und von der Einordnung des buchmalerischen Œuvres des Jean Coene IV. und seiner Werkstatt in den Kontext der Pariser Buchkunst um 1500.

An extraordinary work at the interface between manuscript and book Around 1490 the publisher Anthoine Vérard had a precious and richly illustrated hand-written for the French king. At this time the book printing in Paris was already in full bloom, but the traditional book production is given priority here.In the center is the handbook of the hour, which the Paris publisher Vérard had made for King Charles VIII. The Prayer Book is distinguished above all by its ongoing, painted narrations frame all the texts, and with their explanatory lines like the forerunner of the comic strips. A second, but unfinished, handwriting by the artist, which had recently appeared, seems to be related to the royal prayer book. How the two manuscripts could interact and be connected with the king is examined as well as the question of the artistic context in which the painter is to be settled.
