José Veríssimo was a journalist, professor, and literary historian who primarily focused on sociological essays and literary criticism. His works explored the life and culture of the Amazon, reflecting a deep understanding of Brazilian society and its history. Veríssimo was also a significant figure in the reform of the Brazilian educational system and played a key role in founding the Brazilian Academy of Letters. Although he later withdrew from the academy, his literary legacy endures through his insightful analysis of Brazilian culture and literature.
