This volume offers an English translation of 15 selected essays from the seven-volume commentary on Plato's Republic, edited by Mario Vegetti. The essays cover a range of topics, including Thrasymachus, the role of poetry in education, the concept of the noble lie, and the happiness of the Guardians versus the polis. Other subjects include the status of utopia, philosophical knowledge, the Idea of the Good, and dialectics. The collection also addresses mathematics in Plato's time, critiques of democracy and oligarchy, and the image of the soul in relation to justice. It is important to note that this selection does not reflect a qualitative judgment of the essays; rather, the aim was to present critical assessments of key aspects of the dialogue, such as politics, ethics, epistemology, and ontology. This approach allows readers to appreciate the interpretative style of the commentary and the insights gained from interpreting the Republic. Consequently, essays focusing on literary and psychological aspects, as well as the work's historical impact, were excluded. The hope is that these selected pieces will encourage readers to explore the broader collective work from which they originate.
