Naše kultura hodně žije problematikou životního stylu. Nejrůznější časopisy se zabývají oblečením, zdravou životosprávou, hubnutím, sexuálním životem, zařízením interiérů či pěstováním květin, tanečními a hudebními styly, sportováním, atd. atd. Většinou se věnují tomu, jak věci vypadají navenek. Ježíše ale mnohem více zajímalo (a zřejmě zajímá i dnes), co je pod povrchem toho, jak žijeme, o jaké hodnoty se opíráme a co je hlubší motivací našeho konání. Ve známém kázání na hoře nám odpovídá na otázku, co to znamená, že jsme ‚ve světě‘, ale nikoliv ‚ze světa‘“. Jeho kázání v souhrnu představuje křesťanský životní styl. A přitom náš životní styl bývá z velké části inspirován spíše tím, čemu se dnes říká „západní kultura“. A právě v tom se skrývá náročná výzva: Má evangelium skutečně vliv na to, jak žijeme, nebo jde jen o „povrchový nátěr“? Výzva je to náročná, protože lidé kolem nás hladoví po autentičnosti života; slova na ně dělají pramalý dojem.
