Albrecht Fuchs Book order

On Photography presents photographs by Munich artist Martin Fengel, which he exhibited in the central foyer of the Villa Stuck to mark the 20th anniversary of the municipal museum. Fengel invited authors from a variety of disciplines to write personal texts to accompany his photographs. Fengel's access to an inexhaustible reservoir of images, which he presents in a very diverse configuration, is also reflected in the associated texts. In some cases, the images seem to be telling a story; in others, they are positioned side by side in isolation. This volume is designed as an artist's book and completes the exhibition in the Villa Stuck. Exhibition: Museum Villa Stuck, München, Germany (16.04.2012 - 05.06.2013).

Im Frühjahr 2008 wurde Albrecht Fuchs für seine fotografische Auswahl »Portraits« für den »Deutsche Börse Photography Prize 2008« nominiert, was bereits in der Presse große Begeisterung auslöste. Fuchs, als »Liebling der Künstler« bezeichnet, dokumentierte 1995 Martin Kippenberger in einer impulsiven und einflussreichen Serie. Er begleitete Kippenberger an verschiedene Orte, darunter Dawson City und ins Atelier, und erlebte dabei seine »Lehrstunden als Fotograf«. Kippenberger, bekannt für seine kalkulierte Bildwirkung, verstand es, die Fotografen zu inspirieren und die größtmögliche Bildtreue seiner Ideen herauszukitzeln. Dies war kein bloßes Posing; Fuchs’ Begeisterung für diesen Prozess führte zu seinem unabhängigen und sensiblen Porträtstil. Der Band, in einem besonderen Format, ist sorgfältig gedruckt und verarbeitet und erscheint in einer limitierten Auflage von nur 800 signierten Exemplaren, von denen 30 einer Vorzugsausgabe mit drei Kippenberger-Motiven vorbehalten sind.

Albrecht Fuchs, born in 1964 in Bielefeld, is a portrait artist who works with photography. His methodology of respectful distance and loving empathy leads to a strange tension in his photographs, despite the quietude and equilibrium in the compositions. Naturally, the people portrayed in the meticulously constructed images, both in terms of the use of light and color composition, stare with a serious demeanor. They would like to appear sympathetic and as result are a little lost in reverie. And yet upon closer inspection one feels there is a sense of authenticity in the moment here which one would normally be denied. With a few of his more prominent portraits, including Martin Kippenberger, Mike Kelley, and Paul McCarthy, Albrecht Fuchs appears to be our constant companion in magazines or daily newspapers. This current volume contains a large number of photographs selected and ordered by Albrecht Fuchs for the first time.
