Illustrating the tension of politics in contemporary Belgium, this title chronicles the growth of Belgium throughout the past 2 centuries. It shows how these two cultures - the economically, politically, and culturally less- developed Flemish majority and the Walloon minority - underwent a process of equalization that brought about a federal model.

The authors of this historical survey endeavor to describe the different stages of language dominance in all its complexity. The first aim is to define this evolution to the socio-political and cultural relationships in Belgium and the general linguistic and political strategies as they were and have always been put into effect throughout the world.
