Fin Macleod, now head of security on a privately owned Lewis estate, is charged with investigating a spate of illegal game-hunting taking place on the island. La narrazione è ricca di intrighi, tradimenti e viaggi tempestosi, con un erotismo gioioso e un'ironia disincantata. Il mondo della tarda età del bronzo prende vita, mostrando il conflitto tra le civiltà: l'Oriente in decadenza e l'Occidente razionalista e cinico.
