Im Dezember 2020 wird der Ceneri-Basistunnel dem Betrieb übergeben, der letzte wichtige Baustein des Eisenbahn-Grossprojekts AlpTransit. Er wird sowohl den internationalen Warenverkehr als auch die künftige Entwicklung des Kantons Tessin stark beeinflussen, in dessen Kultur auch heute noch die Unterscheidung zwischen diesseits und jenseits dieses Gebirgsübergangs – Sopraceneri und Sottoceneri – tief verwurzelt ist. Dank des Tunnels und der verkürzten Fahrzeiten verschmelzen die Städte Lugano, Bellinzona und Locarno zu einem Lebens- und Wirtschaftsraum, einer «Città Monte Ceneri» sozusagen.
