Von der SS im Frühjahr 1933 in einem ehemaligen Militärgefängnis am Tempelhofer Feld eingerichtet, wurde das Columbia-Haus schnell zum Inbegriff des frühen NS-Terrors in der Reichshauptstadt. In diesem Gestapogefängnis und Konzentrationslager waren bis zu seiner Schließung im November 1936 etwa 8000 Männer inhaftiert.
