The architectural history of the Louvre stretches back to the early 13th century. A comparatively modest royal fortress, it became the royal residence under Francois I, friend and patron of Leonardo da Vinci. Louis XIV turned the Louvre into a splendid castle. Four years after the outbreak of the French Revolution, the Louvre opened its doors to the public. The royal art collections, with constant additions through Napoleon's military campaigns and forays as well as donations, purchases and excavations, today make the Louvre one of the world's richest and finest museums. Candida Höfer, known for her images of deserted public spaces, photographed the empty rooms and galleries of the Louvre on days when it was closed to the public. In her luminous color pictures, the treasures of Western art enter into a silent yet eloquent dialog with the architectural setting, the luxurious or sober decor, the building's past, and its present as a museum.

Anhand einer Auswahl von rund 120 Gemälden, Skulpturen, Papierarbeiten und Glasobjekten untersucht dieser Band erstmals die bislang kaum beleuchteten Spuren des Barocks in der Kunst nach 1950. Charakteristische Arbeiten unterschiedlicher Stilrichtungen der Nachkriegskunst wie Informel, Abstraktion oder ZERO werden in Künstler*innen-Räumen barocken Kunstwerken gegenübergestellt. So begegnen unter anderen Arbeiten von Niki de Saint Phalle, Dieter Roth oder Hann Trier den barocken Werken von Agostino Carracci, Giovanni Battista Gaulli oder Hendrick Goltzius und – es mag überraschen – in diesen Begegnungen wird deutlich, wie viele Künstler*innen nach 1950 künstlerische Prinzipien des Barocks in ihrem eigenen Schaffen reflektieren.

Im Jahr 1964 übereignete der Landgerichtsrat Dr. Hans Lühdorf (1910–1983) der Stadt Düsseldorf 70 hochkarätige Blätter, unter anderem von Klee, Nolde und Marc, die einen ausgezeichneten Überblick über die Grafik des Expressionismus vermitteln. Während der Kriegsjahre spezialisierte Lühdorf seine Sammlung auf diese künstlerische Gattung, um sie vor der Zerstörungswut der Nationalsozialisten zu bewahren. Dabei war es ihm ein Bedürfnis, nicht nur Werke der Künstler zu besitzen, sondern auch persönlich mit ihnen in Kontakt zu treten. Hiervon zeugt der bislang unveröffentlichte Briefwechsel mit Nolde und Jawlensky. Da die meisten Arbeiten seit ihrer Schenkung kaum der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht wurden, besticht die hier vorliegende Publikation durch die erstmalige farbige Wiedergabe ausgesuchter Graphiken. In 1964 the district court councillor Dr. Hans Lühdorf (1910–1983) handed over seventy sheets of Expressionist graphic works from his collection to the City of Düsseldorf. It had been his desire not only to own the artists’ works but also to have personal contact with them, which is witnessed by the hitherto unpublished correspondences with Nolde and Jawlensky. As most of the works were barely made available to the public after they were donated, this current publication now captivates with the first colour reproduction of select graphic prints.
