Alfred Edersheim (1825-1889) est né à Vienne, dans une famille juive qui parlait couramment l'anglais, et qui lui fit apprendre l'hébreu dans la Torah et le Talmud. Converti au christianisme à vingt ans, il devint pasteur de l'Église libre d'Écosse, dans la Vieille Aberdeen, après une année de missionnariat auprès des Juifs roumains. D'une santé fragile il dut ensuite se déplacer, vers le sud : à Torquay, puis à Oxford, où il donnait des cours sur la Septante ; il est mort en France, à Menton. On retient de lui plusieurs ouvrages, dans lesquels il éclaire les textes bibliques par sa connaissance de première main de la culture et de la littérature juives : Histoire de la Bible en sept volumes, Le Temple, ses ministres, son culte au temps de Jésus-Christ, Histoire de la Nation Juive, La Vie et les Temps de Jésus le Messie, etc. L'un deux, que nous rééditons ici, Sketches of Jewish Social Life, fut traduit en français par le pasteur Gustave Roux, et parut en 1896. Il ne fait pas double emploi avec le célèbre livre d'Edmond Stapfer, La Palestine au temps de Jésus-Christ, en ce que s'il est moins méthodique que ce dernier, il nous immerge plus profondément, et avec plus d'empathie, dans l'atmosphère terrestre et spirituelle respirée par le Sauveur, lors de sa première venue.
