Michel Jouvet

Michel Jouvet was an Emeritus Professor of Experimental Medicine whose work delved into neurophysiology and states of vigilance. He was the first to describe the electroencephalogram signs of cerebral death and categorized sleep into two distinct states: telencephalic sleep and rhombencephalic sleep, known as paradoxical sleep (REM sleep). In his speculative theory, Jouvet proposed that the purpose of dreaming is an iterative neurological programming that preserves an individual's psychological heredity.
