      Kitty Hart werd geboren in het Poolse Bielsko. Bij het uitbreken van de Tweede Wereldoorlog was zij twaalf jaar. Wegens haar joodse afkomst vluchtte zij samen met haar familie voor de Nazi's, maar ze werd in maart 1942 gearresteerd. Het nu 15-jarige meisje belandde samen met haar moeder in Auschwitz. Hier beleefde de jonge Poolse alle vernederingen die stereotiep waren voor dit beruchte concentratiekamp. Maar niets kon haar wil om verder te leven breken. Dankzij een haast bovennatuurlijk doorzettingsvermogen wist zij de hel van Auschwitz te overleven.
