Le grand nocturne (1942) et Les cercles de l'épouvante (1943) sont issus d'une période d'intense activité pour l'écrivain gantois, qui a également publié ses grands romans, La cité de l'indicible peur et Malpertuis, en 1943. Bien que la guerre n'ait pas d'influence directe sur son œuvre, Jean Ray, emprisonné de 1926 à 1929 pour des malversations boursières, a dû survivre durant les années 1930 en publiant des articles variés et des récits fantastiques, malgré l'échec de son recueil La croisière des ombres (1932). Pendant l'Occupation, l'édition belge subit des pressions, rendant les liens avec Paris difficiles. Jean Ray publie alors dans la presse collaborationniste, évitant de se référer à la politique.
