Pat Baker hailed from a prominent Māori family with deep roots on the East Coast. He was the first Māori to be granted a university scholarship to study journalism. After working for newspapers in the South Island, he returned to the East Coast to farm before heading south again to enter the Pākehā business world. His work reflects his unique perspective and cultural background.
