Scotland's labour history has been extensively studied through various publications by local groups, amateur historians, and academics. Traditionally, these works are expected to be in Standard English, overlooking the everyday speech of the workforce. This publication prioritizes the authentic voices of individuals whose vibrant language reflects their experiences in work and leisure. Emerging from the oral history project 'The End of the Shift,' it aims to document the working practices and conditions of skilled workers in Scotland's past industries. The project attracted retired engineers from the Melville-Brodie Engineering Company in Kirkcaldy, who had experienced the impact of industrial closures firsthand. The closure of their firm not only dispersed the workforce but also lost generations of skills and expertise. As they reflected on their unparalleled training, these engineers recognized the importance of preserving their knowledge for future generations. They also sought to commemorate their training firm with a memorial at the former Melville-Brodie site. Councillor Kay Carrington of Fife Council expressed enthusiasm for the project, emphasizing its significance in showcasing the region's history and contributions, and the need to pass this legacy on to future generations.
