Samuel Morris Steward, also known by numerous pseudonyms including Phil Andros and Phil Sparrow, transitioned from a career as a poet, novelist, and university professor to become a tattoo artist and pornographer. Throughout his life, he meticulously maintained extensive, secret diaries and records of his sexual experiences. He spent much of his adult life in Chicago, tattooing sailors, gang members, and street individuals from a parlor on South State Street. Later, he moved to the San Francisco Bay area, where he served as the official tattoo artist for the Hells Angels motorcycle gang during the late 1960s.
