Influenced by his prairie roots, Ukrainian heritage, and Roman Catholicism, his realistic and symbolic paintings captured his cultural history and religious vision. Following a period of significant emotional and psychological struggles, his conversion to Catholicism marked a turning point, leading him to create profound religious series. He became an established artist known for alternating between realistic depictions of prairie life and didactic works, often accompanied by simple texts, which he later published in books.
