William Kurelek was a painter and writer whose work carried an evangelistic message. Influenced by his prairie roots, Ukrainian heritage, and Roman Catholicism, his realistic and symbolic paintings captured his cultural history and religious vision. Following a period of significant emotional and psychological struggles, his conversion to Catholicism marked a turning point, leading him to create profound religious series. He became an established artist known for alternating between realistic depictions of prairie life and didactic works, often accompanied by simple texts, which he later published in books.
30 colour plates and 16 black and white drawings, with accompanying text, resulting from the author/artist's trip to Baffin Island to research, paint and write a book portraying the culture of the Inuit.
