Príbeh začína 26. júla roku 1864, keď posádka jachty Duncan ulovila žraloka a v jeho útrobách objavila tri neúplné listiny. Boli napísané po francúzsky, po anglicky a po nemecky a obsahovali správu o stroskotaní lode Britannia s kapitánom Grantom a posádkou na 37° 11' južnej šírky (údaje o zemepisnej dĺžke boli bohužiaľ nečitateľné). Majiteľ jachty lord Glenarvan neváhal ani okamih a vydal sa spoločne so svojou manželkou, kapitánom Johnom Manglesom, majorom Mac Nabbsom, roztržitým zemepiscom Jacquesom Paganelom a s Mary a Robertom Grantovými, deťmi strateného škótskeho kapitána, na dobrodružnú záchrannú výpravu, ktorá v podstate znamenala cestu okolo sveta po 37. rovnobežke. 66-149-76
